【报告摘要】

Climate modelling is undergoing a profound transformation. Advances in high-performance computing, Earth observations, and artificial intelligence are enabling a new generation of Earth system models that operate at unprecedented resolution, and provide new opportunities to understand and anticipate climate variability, extremes, and change. This presentation will discuss how global kilometre-scale modelling, physically consistent climate storylines, and operational climate simulations are reshaping climate science. Together, these advances are moving the field beyond traditional climate projections. It will be argued that AI is accelerating this transformation. While AI challenges conventional approaches to climate modelling, it also has the potential to fundamentally strengthen physics-based models. From AI-assisted model development and porting to next-generation computing architectures, to emulation, scientific discovery, and interactive exploration of vast climate datasets, AI is becoming an integral part of the climate modelling ecosystem. Together, these developments are laying the foundations for a new era of climate modelling in which physics-based models, AI, and observations work seamlessly together to deepen our understanding of the Earth system and support informed decision-making in a rapidly changing world.

【专家简介】

Thomas Jung is Head of the Climate Dynamics Section at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), Germany, and Full Professor of Physics of the Climate System at the University of Bremen. He received his PhD in Atmospheric Physics in 2000 and subsequently spent almost a decade at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), where he contributed to advances in numerical weather prediction and climate modelling.

His research focuses on global kilometre-scale Earth system modelling, polar climate processes, climate prediction, and the development of next-generation digital twins of the Earth system. More recently, his work has expanded to include AI-assisted Earth system modelling, scientific software development, and the integration of artificial intelligence with physics-based climate models. He coordinates the Horizon Europe project EERIE and plays leading roles in the European Destination Earth Climate Digital Twin initiative and several national and international climate modelling programmes.

Professor Jung has authored more than 140 scientific publications and has received several awards for his scientific contributions and teaching. He has served in numerous international leadership roles, including chairing scientific advisory and steering committees in weather and climate research. His work is driven by the goal of advancing fundamental scientific understanding while developing the modelling capabilities needed to improve climate projections, understand weather and climate extremes, and support climate adaptation and informed decisionmaking.
